Teaching Kids to Fly Fish616 KIDS FLY FISHING 2017

Last week we had Matthew Swartz and a rainbow he caught on Fishing Creek with his dad. This week we came across a short 5-point story by Kirk Deeter, Teaching Kids to Fly Fish: The Five Golden Rules. Great read....and good tips.

Yeti It

Okay, so maybe I’m a slow learner but I can recall the first time I saw a Yeti cooler. It was in a local hardware store and I remember the sticker shock. I also remember thinking that my old Coleman works just fine. About three weeks later I was in Holbox, Mexico, fishing with Sand Flea, a local outfitter, and he's standing on a Yeti cooler. I said something about the Yeti and he replied, “What? you don't have one?” And then a while after that I was on the Bighorn river in Montana with outfitter, Matt McMeans, and of course there’s a Yeti in the boat. I made a comment and Matt stares at me and quips, “You don't have one?”

I got home from the Bighorn and friend Ross Purnell, editor of Fly Fisherman Magazine, showed up for a few days of fishing 33 SUSQUHANNA RIVERand in the back of his truck is a Yeti. I couldn't help it, so I asked if he thought they were really that good. You guessed it, Ross said, “You don't have one?” I shook my head. Well, I guess he made a few calls because a couple weeks later a Yeti showed up on our porch, so I tried it. At the end of a long hot summer day, it was still full of ice. I was amazed but was blown away when the next morning, and the next, the Yeti still had most of the ice. Well, the old Coleman is now used for storage in the barn and I currently own three different Yeti coolers and two Yeti tumblers which, incidentally, keeps our coffee hot for hours.

Our truck now sports a Yeti decal and when someone asks about a Yeti, well, you can guess what my answer is.

How To Fish A Streamer

Streamers are effective flies to fish in any season. In a recent How-to episode from RIO, Russ Miller gives us some good tips to try when fishing these flies. With fall and cooler water just around the corner, these tips will be useful.
