Simon in Alaska & Net Extension

Simon in Alaska

SimonSome of you will remember Simon Gawesworth's Spey Clinic which we hosted here a couple years ago. It was a fun weekend with Simon at the helm demonstrating spey casting (as only he can) and helping everyone master the art. This past season Reel Action Camp on the Kenektok River in Alaska hosted a similar clinic (but with much better catch rates!) and have just announced that Simon is returning to Reel Action for a second clinic in July 2018. If you're thinking about Alaska and spey casting, this is definitely for you. Check out the details below and then book your spot because there won't be many and they will go quickly.

And speaking of Alaska, we're hosting a week at Reel Action, Aug. 3-12, 2018, timed for silver salmon. It's an exciting time to be in Alaska as this video clip from Reel Action will show:

Bill's Net Extension

903 BIGHORN 2017 Bill Dohmke came up with a great idea for a landing net extension which he shared with us on the Bighorn this past August. Bill took a standard size net and added a 24 inch extension which makes life a lot easier when you have to reach out of a boat or over a weed bed to net a fish. Bill also pointed out that it helps as we get older and find 904 BIGHORN 2017 that it is harder to bend down. The extension is made of ash and is connected with two stainless steel bolts making it easy to take apart for including in checked luggage. Kudos to Bill for a great idea.

Alaska & Africa

Reel Action, Alaska

KANEKTOK AK 20163956We just came off an amazing week of silver salmon fishing on the Kanektok River, Alaska. A stone's throw from the Bering Sea, Reel Action Camp is strategically located as all the pacific salmon make their migration from the sea, past the lodge, to their river of birth to spawn. Our trip was perfectly timed for silvers, our favorite of the salmon, because silvers love to eat flies, jump, run line, and fight. They're big, beautiful, and brutish.

We have lots of photos, including a collection of photos from the group. Take a look and think about our 2018 departure. Same time. Same place.

Africa, July 28 - August 11, 2017
East Africa Safari & the Great Migration

As our 2017 Safari is taking shape, we still have several spaces available. Beginning with the lovely Kichwa Tembo Camp and continuing to Hemingway-esque Serengeti Under Canvas, Lake Manyara Tree Lodge, and concluding with the luxuious Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, our safari encompasses the best that East Africa has to offer in the way of luxury camps, lodges, and game viewing. Timed for our best chance at seeing the annual Great Migration, one of nature's most amazing spectacles. This is going to be an incredible safari.

If you've been contemplating Africa, please review our itinerary, and give us or Kathy Schulz at Frontiers (800-245-1950), a call. This is a premier safari and we're excited about being in Africa next summer. We'd love to have you join us!

Checking in from Alaska

Checking in from Alaska

Internet & communication has been spotty with the Becks this week, but we were able to receive this email & as always, a few photos to hold us over til they return.  Here's what they had to say....

We are at Reel Action camp this week on the Kanetok River in Alaska, chasing silvers, pinks, fresh chums, and rainbows. Weather has been rainy and mostly cloudy which has been very good for the fishing. We're about a mile from the Bering Sea and the salmon are fresh and hot. We are exhausted each night from fighting big fish. Camp is comfortable, food is simple but delicious, and fishing is off the charts. We'll have more next week when Barry gets the photos edited.

Recap on the Frontier's Fly Fishing Weekend

ff weekend

It was a fun weekend here on Fishing Creek with the group. We learned about casting, bugs, leaders, flies, stripers, bluegills, and trout. The weather was uncooperative, rainy, windy and cold — it even snowed for a couple minutes. From Canada, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania the group had a great time. Can't wait to do it again. Thanks to Frontiers, Sage, and the Lodge at Raven Creek for hosting a great event!

This week at Reel Action, Alaska

Cathy & Barry are in Alaska this week and we've been anxious to hear from them.  While they've traveled to Alaska a number of times, this was their first time at this camp.  It is more rustic than most but the fishing was supposed to be fantastic.  When we received an email from Cathy this morning, here's what she wrote:  "Dolly Varden are everywhere, lots of pinks, lots of chum, silvers are just showing up. Rainbows are alreadReel Action AK 2014548-1y on the eggs but that said, we've caught some great rainbows on mouse patterns. Weather is great for this time of year in Alaska and the food in camp is over the top. Life is good here on the Kanetok!"  Sounds like they are having a great time.

Here's a photo she included of Paul Jacob holding an exceptional Dolly.

Rods Available - September, Alaska

We seldom have rods available this late in the summer for our September Alaska trip. As the photos show, the rainbows are fattened up from a summer of feasting and are in great shape getting ready for winter. The tundra landscape is beautiful, fresh cool mornings, often with fresh snow on the mountains.

Rainbows & Sockeyes

Fall is a gorgeous season anywhere, but especially so in Alaska. Grab one of these spots and come along for a week of exceptional fishing and scenery. Details. Contact us or Stew Armstrong at Frontiers today!
